Updates to Edufy – Tagging and Standards!

The Edufy team is excited to announce that we have just launched several new improvements and capabilities to Edufy based on feedback from the community. We are hopeful that these new features will help you successfully prepare for the upcoming school year. As always, please make your voice heard on how we can make Edufy better and more relevant to your classroom needs. Without further delay…

Improved support for Embedded Tables – you told us that some tables weren’t displaying properly in activities, many times stretching too wide across the page making the activity very difficult to view online and offline. In this release tables will self format so that they display optimally both online and when printed out for use in the classroom.

Standards Alignment – just the first step of many, we are introducing support for Standards alignment for Edufy activities. Providing this alignment empowers you to easily incorporate into your broader curriculum goals. In this release we have begun with the ability to align to Virginia State Standards with other states to come in the coming weeks and months. Standards alignments can be seen when viewing any individual activity. Look for Standards based searching in a future release!

Activity Tagging – our goal is make it very simple and intuitive to find the best, relevant activities for your needs. As hard as our team works to curate and classify the activities, it can never replace the power of the Edufy community. Our new tagging feature adds one more layer of classification and data to search against so that you can explore and discover activities on your own terms.

Teach Love blog

Nicole Calderbank runs the blog “Teach Love“, where she shares things that she has discovered that help her in the classroom. This is collection of ideas that she has explored and implemented, many are for the elementary audience. If readers have had an experience using the topic she discusses, that reader can share whether this worked well for them at the end of their post. In my opinion, the action of voting and ranking online resources we find is the only way we can separate the cream from the crop. Ignoring new ideas won’t help us move forward, but trying to keep up with ALL of it would drive a person crazy!

Edufy at eduTecher

This week, Edufy showed up on the home page at eduTecher.com – a website to help teachers decide which tech solutions will help them teacher better, and which ones won’t. It’s an honor to be included in their list. At eduTecher, teachers can navigate through the online resources available, find descriptions, and even watch videos that walk you through how to use the resources to help students achieve.

A visit to eduTecher provides other interesting tools like Android and iPhone apps to organize the waves of new resources available every day – which can be a full time job.

Enjoy the summer everyone, best wishes, and thanks again for helping to make great teaching easier!

Summertime, for relaxing, planning and reflecting

Hi everyone – we apologize for the slight radio silence but we have been busy at work taking a look at the feedback from all of you about how we can continue to serve you better in your mission to deliver great STEM education through activity based learning.

Relaxing We hope all of you have had some time to appreciate some well deserved rest and relaxation. Our team is busy enhancing our site for 2011-2012; look for exciting enhancements within the next few weeks!

Reflecting 2010-2011 was an amazing year for Edufy and the Edufy community and we can only thank all of you for that! We are anticipating some great things in the upcoming year but did want to take a moment to recognize our achievements – rather YOUR achievements. We want to hear from you about how your early experiences using Edufy content have impacted your classroom. Please email us at ben@edufy.org if you have a story to share – we will be selecting several to showcase on the main Edufy site!   Email us now with a short description of your experience and we will contact you if you are selected for the showcase!

Planning  Also, halfway through the summer, we know many of you may be starting to prepare for the next school year and we encourage you to reach out to us whenever you have ideas on how Edufy can improve. We stand ready!

Edufy gets a facelift and youtube integration

Greetings Edufy Community. We hope you all have racing to the Summer and for many of you, a short but well deserved vacation.

Here at Edufy we are not resting and continue to build out content and improve the site primarily based on feedback you are giving us via the ‘Contact’ link so please continue sharing your feedback. We are excited to share some important improvements that we are confident will improve your overall experience with Edufy.

1. Youtube in activities – many of you told us that multimedia was becoming more integral in how you communicate concepts to certain learners. You will now be able to easily embed Youtube videos into your activities by clicking the ‘Youtube’ icon anywhere you see a Visual Text Box  Editor such as in the Procedure section. Based on your feedback we plan on introducing other media services in the coming future.

2. Easier Filtering of Results – get to the results you want faster with a new ‘Results Refinement’ toolbar at the top of the results screen. From here you can easily select and add additional criteria that will immediately further filter the results by Grade, Learning Style, or Learning Cycle.

3. A new look and layout – before signing into Edufy, the site has been largely re-organized so that we can better share important Edufy community information including popular activities as well as updates from the Edufy team via the blog.

4. A new video, Edufy in the classroom – our founder has been enjoying great success using Edufy in his own classroom and we wanted to share that experience with all of you and others that may not have signed up yet. Do you have a video you want to share? Please let us know!

5. Share Edufy – last but certainly not least is an easier way to build our community. As we’ve mentioned before the community is the most important part of Edufy and we need your help growing it through your existing trusted networks. Now you can easily share Edufy and invite others by just entering their email address.

We hope you enjoy these improvements and continue to give us feedback so that we can continue to evolve the site to adapt to your needs. Of course, please recommend Edufy to a colleague which you can now do via the ‘Share Edufy’ button! We are only as powerful as the quality of our community.

Thank you all again for helping us make the classroom experience more powerful and engaging. Together we can all help make great teaching easier.

Exciting updates to the Edufy Site – Coming Soon

The Edufy team is excited to share with you some upcoming changes to the Edufy site. First and foremost, we will be launching a redesigned homepage that will make it easier to find information about the Edufy community while ensuring it is still enjoyable and equally easy to find great activities in just a few clicks. In addition to a new look, we are also introducing some new features based on feedback including Youtube integration, more powerful and intuitive filtering of results and generally better helptext throughout the site.

We have also created a new video that will be showcased on our new site demonstrating how Edufy is actually being used in a live classroom. Get a sneak peak!

Remember to register for an account to personalize your Edufy experience (saving favorites) and participate in the community (share activities, rate and comment on existing activities, and request new activities).

Sharing and requesting activities

Sharing and requesting

Teachers are not only sharing activities (Aliza from NJ shared great review activity for Newton’s laws while playing whiffle ball)…

O-H-I-O

…but are turning more frequently to the new “Request Activity” button because they know they get a quick response. Phyllis from OH asked for ideas on modeling the function of a virus and Edufy helped out – she was grateful for the quick reply and the good idea!

Listservs are built to share ideas, Edufy is built to share activities (not lessons)

I’m a member of list servs that are perfect for sharing thoughts, but we designed the Edufy format to solve common listserv compliants:
a) Edufy activities get tagged with learning style, duration, “like it” votes, and more so you instantly filter out the activities that aren’t needed. Emails lack those filters, so it takes precious time to read and decide what fits and what doesn’t.
b) Our library is a great archive, even if you just joined. New teachers just joining a listserv don’t have access to all the activities shared before they started teaching.

Solving YOUR Problem!

c) Edufy only sends messages when someone tries to solve YOUR problem. Listservs send too many messages that you don’t want, and no one likes a clogged inbox!

As the Edufy library of easy to find, easy to use activities grows, it’s nice to know that people are using this to request activities. Here, they last forever, and are easy to find because they get tagged as “hands on” or “15 minutes duration”.

Thanks for everyone out there sharing and using Edufy. Make sure to spread the word to other innovative teachers so the library can continue to grow.

Best wishes,

-Phil
